LYING ON HIS SIDE, facing away from the bed, Cal stared at the reflection of the colored lights twinkling on the wall. The same as she'd done every year, Darby had placed the small ceramic tree on their night table. She'd turn it off just before she fell asleep, but it was nice to see that she hadn't thrown that tradition out in light of their current situation. It was almost comforting, especially after they day they'd just enjoyed.

It brought back memories of happier times, though until now it had only been the two of them, because his parents had been busy decorating their own house. That should have made this a somber occasion, but it had been really nice. They'd all gone out of their way to make sure it was though.

Maybe it worked because they'd spent an hour at the cemetery the day before, just being there with his mom and brother, including them in their celebration in the only way they could. Another good thing had come of it. Now he thought he could visit their gravesites once in a while – without falling apart as he'd feared before.

"Cal?"

"What?"

"I want you to know that this doesn't change anything. I still don't believe you can change. I don't believe I'll ever have children if I stay with you. But I do know this has been bothering you, so I wanted to let you know that I broke things off with Dylan today."

He lay there quietly, not entirely sure how one was supposed to respond to something like that. What was the proper response from a husband when his wife told him she'd broken up with her boyfriend? After a moment, he asked,

"Are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

He thought she sounded a little confused. Like she hadn't been expecting that question. What did she think he'd do? Rejoice? Sure, it was the best news he'd had in weeks, but he also knew she cared a lot about the creep. Enough so she'd wanted the opportunity to see if their relationship could go somewhere once he was out of the picture, and he didn't like the thought of her hurting. Not even over something that cut him like a knife.

"Do you want to talk about it?" That made her laugh a little.

"Do you have any idea how weird that would be?"

"Well...yeah. But then this whole situation is kind of weird anyway, don't you think?"

"True enough, I guess."

"What happened?"

"He started being a jerk when I told him that Dad was coming home for the holidays, and that I wasn't going to be moving out on the first."

"A jerk?" Cal asked, his muscles tensing. "Was he mean to you?"

"Not really. Just ugly. Jealous, resentful, petty, childish. And I realized I didn't know him as well as I thought I did, and I didn’t want someone like him in my life."

"You told him this afternoon?"

"Yes."

"How did he take it?"

"About like I expected. He said he'd only been using me to try and get me in bed, and then- Well, you saw my sweater.
